Dr. Diedrich Holtkamp serves as an Attending Surgeon in the Dept. of Surgery. He received hiss medical education at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universitaet in Frankfurt/Germany. His dissertation to obtain a medical doctorate was completed in 1973. After completing his internship he came to the United States in 1973 to start a residency in Obstetrics/Gynecology.

A strong preference for surgery and a conversation with the then chairman of surgery, Dr. Samuel Kountz led me to a switch into the surgical residency program at SUNY Downstate, completed in 1978. A year of training as a vascular fellow, also at Downstate, followed. Board certification in General Surgery was granted in 1980.

Private general and vascular surgical practice as a voluntary attending physician at SUNY Downstate, Long Island College Hospital and Lutheran Medical Center has been Dr. Holtkamp's professional focus since. All general surgical procedures and peripheral vascular procedures are performed regularly. Peripheral vascular interventions and treatment of vein problems are an area of special interest.

Throughout Dr. Holtkamp's surgical life there was close contact and interaction with surgical residents in their training. Dr. Holtkamp believes this contact plays an essential role in the growth and development of a surgeon.
