Asher Hirshberg, M.D.
Dr. Hirshberg graduated from the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical School in Jerusalem, Israel, and completed his training in general surgery at the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer, Israel, and the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine, University of Kwazulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa.

He completed clinical fellowships in the USA in trauma/critical care
at the Ben Taub General Hospital in Houston, TX,
and in vascular surgery at the Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, CA.

Dr. Hirshberg in an acute care general and vascular surgeon with a special interest in trauma. He was the Founding Director of the Trauma Service at the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer, Israel, the main teaching hospital of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University.

In 2000 he came to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston as Director of Vascular Surgery at the Ben Taub General Hospital and in August 2006 joined the Department of Surgery at Kings County Hospital and SUNY Downstate College of Medicine.

Dr. Hirshberg's basic research focuses on the use of cutting-edge computer modeling and simulation methods to address clinical problems in trauma and disaster preparedness.

He has published 60 papers in peer-reviewed journals on a wide array of topics in trauma surgery, and is one of the pioneers of damage control surgey for trauma. He has also authored or co-authored 30 book chapters in major textbooks including Sabiston's Textbook of Surgery, ACS Surgery, and Mastery of Surgery. Dr Hirshberg is a co-author of "Top Knife - the art and craft of trauma surgery", the leading international bestseller in trauma surgery, with German, Japanese and Portuguese translations. He is also the co-editor of "Vascular Trauma", the only textbook dedicated to injuries to blood vessels.

Dr. Hirshberg's core clinical mission is the care of the critically injured as well as patients with acute surgical and vascular emergencies. He also has a strong ongoing commitment to surgical education for residents and medical students and is an internationally recognized surgical educator in trauma surgery. He is also an authority on the medical consequences of terrorism and the trauma aspects of mass casualty incidents.
